Garbage City is a district in Cairo, Egypt. The city is built on garbage and it is part of daily life for the people. The community collect garbage from all over Cairo and bring it back here to sort, recycle and salvage. They are called the Zabaleen, and are considered the lowest of the lows. However, since the people are exposed to rubbish from childhood, it is nothing out of the ordinary for the people to live in streets lined with mountains of litter, waiting to be sorted or processed.
